Fixed prizes, progressives, triggers and eligibility. Understand the structure behind a casino jackpot headline.
Identify what the number represents
The Gambling Commission's technical glossary describes a progressive jackpot as a prize that grows from a preset base through contributions from amounts staked. A displayed total therefore describes a prize pool or advertised award under particular rules. It does not, by itself, state the chance that a given participant will receive it.
Read the missing dimensions
Imagine two hypothetical counters showing the same amount. One could apply to a single game, while another could be shared across several games. Their identical headline values would not tell you whether their triggers, eligibility, or award conditions matched. Comparing the counters alone would leave most of the meaningful questions unanswered.
Translate the display into questions
Write down the prize currency, qualifying conditions, trigger description, and whether the displayed amount can reset. If the rules do not provide a probability, leave that field blank. A large number is a fact about the advertised prize at a moment in time; it is not a countdown or evidence that a win is approaching.
